Steelers’ music draws upon their 1980s influences of The Cars, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Prince and INXS – and blends that with hypermodern production of swirling reverb and bubbling synthesisers (courtesy live of the incredible Austin Riley) to create something unusually unique and fresh.
Steelers’ debut single “The Part That Hurts The Most” released on 29th November 2024 – no expected it, but its titanic anthem quality, soaring synth refrain and lyrics of escape into something new (inspired by Noah Clegg’s worry for his own 18th birthday) carried over to the college radios of American teens, and resonated with disenfranchised young people in the UK, proving a singalong anthem for the second half of the 2020s.
“Come Get Your Man” was inspired by Noah’s terrible dance moves in a club that doesn’t exist anymore called “TRUTH”. The song is an interesting look from the perspective of the friends of two people (who are in a relationship) and how they see the bumbling fools as a pairing. But it’s also about letting go, not caring! A theme actualised in Steelers’ next single. Come Get Your Man was a top 5 single in the new indie charts in the UK, and blasted Steelers to a new sense of popularity.
Steelers abandoned the rulebook of indie rock on “Help! (I’m Just A)” – with chorus guitars drenched in reverb, chromatic harmony Stevie Wonder would have been proud to deploy on “Talking Book”, and scathing, self-loathing lyrics that give the central protagonist to the general public as a sacrificial victim of fame and success – Help’s first few choral, 7th chord notes of “OH MY GOD HIT IT” established the band as a force to be reckoned with, something unique and different, and serves as the opening introduction to their unmissable live concerts.
